Spontaneity is usually the mortal enemy of great goalies like Cornell's Andy Iles.
The Ithaca native has carved out a spot as one of Division I's best puck-stoppers on the foundation of meticulous preparation, planning virtually every second on the ice down to his last stride.
But when the Big Red beat Clarkson 1-0 in overtime to win an ECAC quarterfinal series Sunday in Lynah Rink, the senior broke away from the pack of his celebrating teammates, raced over to center ice and planted a big kiss on the center ice logo.
Some of that emotional freelancing flowed from the win itself, a triumph that advances the Big Red (17-9-5) to a semifinal meeting against Union (26-6-4) Friday night in Lake Placid.
But a big chunk of that was pure sentimentality. The game was the last one Iles will ever play at Lynah, and he wanted to express his affection for the rink that has staged so many of his greatest moments the past four seasons.
"It was just such an amazing game,'' Iles said. "That was my last opportunity (at home), my last hurrah. I just kind of took it all in.''
And then, as quickly as the freelance impulse struck, the moment was gone. Iles doesn't hit the pause button on his focus for very long.
That urgency is even greater this weekend. Unless Iles beats Union and then the Quinnipiac-Colgate semifinal winner on Saturday night to take an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, these will likely be the final few days of Iles' career at the school.
"My career is winding down. It's kind of sad,'' he said. "Honestly, I'm just kind of staying in the moment. Hopefully we have a lot longer season ahead of us. I'm sure when everything is winding down...that's when I'll sit down and reflect on these four years.''
And there'll be net-full of moments to take in.
Despite standing just 5-foot-9, Iles has been a Big Red workhorse by starting 100 of the school's last 100 games. Earlier this season, Iles set a program record for career saves (2,962), surpassing a mark previously held by current NHLer Ben Scrivens.
Iles, who came up through the Syracuse Stars program, is also ranked in the Top 10 in program history in many other categories - wins (fourth), shutouts (tied for fifth), goals-against average (sixth) and save percentage (eighth).
And he might be a better student than a hockey player. The applied economics major has a 3.82 grade point average and has landed on the deans list six times out of seven semesters. Iles is also one of 10 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, a tribute that honors outstanding community work.
"I've just loved every second of my opportunity at Cornell,'' Iles said. "Sharing my life with 25 other best friends (his teammates) is something I couldn't even dream of. It's definitely been a grind at times. But it's what I love.''
There's more than just Iles' Big Red tenure on the line Friday night. It's possible those might be the final 60 minutes of his career.
Iles was never drafted and has climbed to this stage in large part sparked by the motivation of an underdog. There's a chance that a pro team might give him a look, but goalies his size typically have to knock on a lot of doors to get one open just a crack.
"We'll see. If someone gives me the opportunity, I'll make the most of it,'' he said. "I'd love to have the chance. I'm a believer in you'll fully reach all the goals you dream of. It gives you a little something to keep after, something to drive you harder.''
